Trailer Analysis In Detail

Analysing the graph
The five trailers which I have chosen to analyse all start and end in around the same speed, however they all take very different pathways to get to the end speed. My trailer is going to be most similar in speed to One Hour Photo as I like the idea of having to slowly speed up at the beginning, to  slowing right down before vigorously speeding up to the end of the trailer.
Analysing the table
The average number of locations is 14 this is going to be my aim for number of locations.
The average number of dialogue shots 14   I do not think I am going to be able to have this many, so I try to get around 8 similarly to Blue Steal.
The average number of characters is 8 this may be ambitious for me to achieve; I am going to try for 5 similarly to copycat.

Feedback Research

To get some audience feedback I gave 8 people aged between 14 and 30 a short survey to complete. The survey is as follows >>>

The survey results are shown below >>>

Open publication - Free publishing - More coursework

From the results of this questionnaire I can take ideas and develop them in order to fit what my target audience would expect from this style of film. Overall the feedback is positive, particularly from the middle bracket of the scale. This shows that I am hitting my target audience as this was set at 18 - 25. From the predicted ending of the film, you can see that the audience have picked on the genre I was aiming for and all have a similar thought to how it would end.

Train Shots

These are some shots I am going to use in my trailer, it was good to get used to using the camera and uploading the videos to the computer. Using short snips of this footing could be very effective if timed and used correctly in my trailer.

Submarine voice over

Aspects of this voice over to look in to
For my own trailer I would like my voice over to take on aspects of this voice over. I like how we get an insight into his personality, lifestyle, views and thought processes which lead to his next actions. Although my trailer has a hugely different story line and themes throughout I think that in order to portray the villain’s side of the story better, I will need to take aspects of this voice over and develop and change it to fit my own trailer.
To develop this into a more arty idea, I would like to use metaphors to liken the villains actions to, this I hope will make them more justifiable.

Synopsis

A young average girl gets caught up in an obsession with another girl. Its through the obsessors eyes that we view the film. This girl is justifying to herself and everyone else that there is nothing unhealthy about her actions. There is a growing concern that after her plea for friendship fell through, that this unknowingly dangerous girl will not let it go. Alongside this girls trouble with friendships, her home life is anything but functional and she soon finds herself on a slippery slope spiralling down into a state of mind even she struggles justify.

First Ideas

I conducted a short survey for people (27 participants) within my own age group to see if there were any particular genres which were popular.

From this chart you can see that the top three most popular genres are Horror, Thriller and Psychological horror. From this I think I will base further decisions around these popular favourites. Closely behind these top three is comedy. This would also be a popular choice for my trailer, however is much harder to achieve a professional looking comedy film and this could pose a problem during shooting my shots.

Case Study : Let The Right One In (2008)

Let the right one in was a good starting film when we are looking at conventions because this particular film both develops and challenges conventions whilst at the same time is completely dependent on conventions of similar seemed films.
This particular film develops conventions in the sense that most ‘horror’ films priorities are the scare factor, however this film which is categorised as horror is more focused on storyline rather than the typical horror element we see in many similar films.  I think this is setting A good example to newly developed horror as it reiterates the importance of the audience/character relationship establishment which many similar films forget thus making the storyline less meaningful.
Let the right one in also challenges typical horror and specifically vampire film conventions as the ‘villain’ character is a little girl.  In older horror films we see young girls playing the victim, however more and more popularly they are being used as the ‘villain’ character, such as Hide and Seek (2005).  I think that this poses an interesting question about the innocents of young girls which ultimately makes the film scarier.  Vampires in particular are always perceived as being of the older male category such as Dracula (1931).
This film along with developing and challenging the original conventions of horror and specifically vampire films, it is interestingly completely dependent on the viewer being aware of the typical ‘rules’ or suggestions to vampires as we are not told directly until quite later on that Eli is a vampire.  The creators rely on knowledge which has been imprinted throughout generations of these suggestions of vampir-ism.  I think that this has been very cleverly developed as it leads the viewer into being curious and suspicious of the main character at the beginning. in contrast to by the end where the audience turns out to sympathise with the vampire, an ending rarely used in horror.

Relating this film to NARRATIVE THEORY

I think that the narrative theory which goes with this film best is Levi - Strauss. His theory is based around binary opposites, and this is what makes a good film. There are many binary opposites in Let The Right One In; light and dark, blonde and brunette, boy and girl, companion and companion-less.

I think that although binary opposites are not the basis of a ''good'' film, I think that it gives the film a more arty feel and look.

Aspects I am going to use for my own film

I think that using binary opposites is a good idea as i think it will more interesting to look at. I also like the idea of a clash between two opposing sides weather that be good and bad, light and dark etc.

I also could use aspects from the setting, this setting seems easily achieved yet very effective when used in the right type of narrative.
